What to do right now
A few safe steps protect your family and keep the damage from spreading while you wait for us.
After a fire
Do
- Wait until the fire department says it is safe to go back in.
- Keep the heating and air conditioning off so soot does not spread.
- Wear an N95 mask and gloves around soot and ash.
- Photograph every room before anything is moved or thrown away.
Don’t
- Wipe soot off walls, ceilings or furniture. It smears and sets.
- Use appliances, lights or fans until an electrician checks them.
- Eat food or take medicine that was near the heat, smoke or firefighting water.
- Sweep ash dry or use a leaf blower on it.
After a water leak
Do
- Shut off the water at the main valve if you can do it safely.
- Turn off power to wet rooms only if you can reach the panel from a dry floor.
- Move rugs, furniture and valuables off wet floors.
- Photograph the water and its source for your insurer.
Don’t
- Walk into rooms where water reaches outlets or cords.
- Use a household vacuum to pick up water.
- Turn on lights or fans under a wet or sagging ceiling.
- Wait. Wet drywall, carpet and wood can start to grow mold within 24 to 48 hours.
Based on public safety guidance for homeowners. If anyone is hurt or the fire is still active, call 911 first.

Your home made it through the fire. The smoke may still be inside.
After the January 2025 Palisades and Eaton fires, many homes that never burned still hold smoke odor and fine ash in places you cannot see. Looking clean is not the same as being clean.
We clean the structure and the spaces behind it, and keep a record of the work for your insurance claim.

- Attic and insulation
- Air ducts and vents
- Inside walls and cabinets
- Rugs, fabrics and closets

A strong El Nino is likely this winter
NOAA's October outlook puts the chance above 83%. Heavy rain on the 2025 burn scars can bring mud, debris and flooding into homes. Three things worth doing now:
- Clear gutters, drains and the path water takes past your home.
- Keep sandbags ready where water and mud could reach a door.
- Photograph your rooms and belongings, so any claim starts with a record.
If water, mud or sewage gets into your home, call us: we clean it up, dry the rooms and repair them.

Straight answers to what people ask most after a fire or a leak.
Where is LA Home Restorations?
We are open 24 hours, every day, and our office is at 22223 Pacific Coast Hwy in Malibu. We come to homes in Malibu, Pacific Palisades, Topanga, Brentwood and Santa Monica, and also Calabasas, Agoura Hills, Westlake Village, Woodland Hills, Tarzana and Encino, to see the damage and tell you what the work involves.
Can one company handle water, fire and smoke damage in the same home?
Yes. A fire often brings all three: the fire itself, smoke and soot in rooms it never reached, and the water used to put it out. We dry, clean and rebuild with one company, so you do not have to coordinate separate contractors.
Do you also handle leaks, mold and flood cleanup?
Yes. We find hidden leaks with moisture meters and thermal imaging, remove mold and dry what it grew on, clean up flood water, mud and sewage or septic backups, and board up and tarp a home that a fire or a storm left open. Each one has its own page under Services.
What happens after I call?
If anyone is hurt or a fire is still active, call 911 first. When you call us, tell us what happened and where. We come out to see the damage, tell you what can be saved and what has to be replaced, and then dry, clean, repair or rebuild.
Can you document the damage for my insurance claim?
Yes. We photograph and write down the damage and the work, write our estimate and can bill your insurer directly. Coverage is always your insurer’s decision; our insurance claims page explains what to document and what your insurer decides.
How much does restoration cost?
It depends on the size of the area, how far the water or smoke spread and how much needs rebuilding. We give you an estimate after we see the damage.
Do you rebuild the home after the cleanup?
Yes. The same company that handles the cleanup also does full rebuilds, from new framing to the final finishes, so you do not need to hire a second contractor.
